Palestinian gunmen on Tuesday shot at an Israeli force that had earlier fired on Palestinian farmers in the central Gaza Strip, eyewitnesses have said.
Israeli troops stationed on the eastern border of central Gaza's city of Deir al-Balah opened fire on Palestinian farmers who were working their fields in the border area between Gaza and Israel, eyewitnesses told The Anadolu Agency.
According to witnesses, the shooting resulted in casualties.
Armed Gazans responded, however, by firing several rounds at the Israeli troops that had targeted the farmers, witnesses added.
Following the incident, Israeli troops retreated. Minutes later, Israeli army armored vehicles arrived at the scene and fired heavily at farmland in eastern Deir al-Balah, according to witnesses.
On an almost daily basis, Israeli troops spray Gaza farmland with heavy machinegun fire.
Israeli troops also target Gazans' fishing boats in what Palestinians regard as a "clear violation" of a cease-fire agreement that Palestinian groups signed with Israel last August.
Israel has conducted several limited incursions into the strip since last August 26, when a cease-fire was reached between Palestinian factions and the self-proclaimed Jewish state, ending a seven-week Israeli offensive.
The Israeli military onslaught, which lasted from July 7 to August 26, left 2,160 Palestinians dead – the vast majority of them civilians – and some 11,000 injured.
