25.04.2015 20:18

A Palestinian man on Saturday died of wounds he sustained by Israeli gunfire earlier in the day.

A Palestinian man on Saturday died of wounds he sustained by Israeli gunfire earlier in the day.

The man was said to have stabbed and injured an Israeli soldier near the Ibrahimi Mosque in al-Khalil (Hebron).

"A Palestinian man was killed by Israeli gunfire after stabbing an Israeli soldier near the Ibrahimi Mosque," the Palestinian Red Crescent said on Facebook.

The Director of the Ibrahimi Mosque Munzir Abu al-Filat, meanwhile, told The Anadolu Agency that Israeli soldiers shot at a Palestinian man who crossed one of the gates of the mosque and stabbed a soldier.

He added that the Palestinian man was taken in an Israeli ambulance after Israeli soldiers tied his hands.

"The Israeli army then totally closed the area and prevented Palestinians from reaching the Ibrahimi Mosque," Abu al-Filat said.

Israeli police, meanwhile, confirmed the death of the Palestinian man.

Police spokesperson Luba Samri said the man was in his twenties.

Revered by both Muslims and Jews, the Ibrahimi Mosque complex – known to Jews as the "Cave of the Patriarchs" – is believed to contain the graves of the prophets Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Since the 1994 massacre of 29 Palestinian worshippers inside the Ibrahimi Mosque by extremist Jewish extremist settler Baruch Goldstein, Israeli authorities have kept Muslim and Jewish worshippers segregated.

Al-Khalil is home to roughly 160,000 Palestinian Muslims and some 400 Jewish settlers.
