Palestinians Clash With Israeli Police İn E. Jerusalem

Clashes broke out on Thursday between Palestinian protesters and Israeli forces in East Jerusalem, one day after a Palestinian driver was killed for allegedly hitting several Israeli pedestrians.

Israeli police used stun grenades, teargas and rubber bullets to disperse stone-throwing Palestinians in East Jerusalem's Al-Tur neighborhood, eyewitnesses said.

Similar clashes broke out between Palestinian protesters and Israeli troops in the Silwan and Ras al-Amud neighborhoods, according to witnesses.

"Israeli forces have cordoned off the area, preventing people from entering or leaving," one eyewitness told Anadolu Agency.

According to witnesses, at least ten people suffered temporary asphyxiation after Israeli forces used teargas to disperse Palestinian protesters.

Clashes were also reported in the city's Issawiyya neighborhood, which Israeli forces also cordoned off.

Tension has run high in East Jerusalem since Wednesday, when Israeli police shot a Palestinian driver who allegedly ran over several Israeli pedestrians in Jerusalem.

A three-month-old baby was reportedly killed and eight people injured in the incident.

The driver subsequently died in a hospital.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the holy city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state – a move never recognized by the international community.

In September 2000, a visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by controversial Israeli leader Ariel Sharon sparked what later became known as the "Second Intifada," a popular uprising against the Israeli occupation in which thousands of Palestinians were killed.
