Palestinian factions are ready for a 24-hour humanitarian ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip, a senior member of the umbrella Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said Tuesday.
In a statement following a meeting of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser ABD Rabu said the "Palestinian leadership has agreed with both Hamas and Islamic Jihad that they are ready to cease fire for 24 hours".
He said that "the Palestinian leadership and factions welcome a United Nations call for extending the ceasefire for 72 hours".
The Gaza Strip has been ravaged by relentless Israeli attacks since July 7, leaving 1158 Palestinians dead and more than 6500 others injured.
Israel claims that the offensive, now in its fourth week, aims at halting rocket fire from the blockaded Palestinian territory.
Gaza-based Palestinian factions, meanwhile, have continued to fire rockets at Israeli cities in response to the ongoing Israeli attacks.
ABD Rabu said a delegation representing all Palestinian factions will leave for Cairo "for talks on all issues of the upcoming phase", going on to blame Israel for the raging fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Israel's military operation, dubbed operation "Protective Edge," is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the densely-populate Gaza Strip – which is home to some 1.8 million Palestinians – within the last six years.
