Philippine Army: Abu Sayyaf Militant Captured İn Sulu

27.11.2015 19:33

Commander says cache of firearms also seized during joint army police operations in troubled island province.

Philippine security forces captured a suspected member of an al-Qaeda-linked militant group and seized a cache of firearms during operations Friday in the troubled island province of Sulu, according to the military.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Group Sulu commander, told Anadolu Agency that joint police-army operations led to the arrest of Saddam Jailani at a port in the provincial capital of Jolo at around 02.40 p.m. (0640GMT).

"Jailani is currently in the custody of Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation Detention Group," Arrojado said in the text message.

Jailani is believed to be an Abu Sayyaf member under sub-leader Alhabsy Misaya, who is responsible for the kidnappings of two Malaysians and a South Korean national, according to Arrojado.

The joint security forces also recovered several high powered-firearms, including three M16 rifles and an M14, inside a makeshift hut of the Abu Sayyaf in nearby Patikul town during clearing operations Friday evening.

Meanwhile, Arrojado reiterated his directive that all field units adopt protective measures against attacks from "enemy forces" in Sulu.

Arrojado had issued the order after suspected Abu Sayyaf members riding tandem on a motorcycle shot and wounded a soldier shortly after noon Friday at a detachment in Latih village in Patikul.

"The bandits sped towards Barangay Anuling of the same town after the incident and [Private Muntassir] Kalukasa, who was hit in his foot, was taken to Camp Bautista Station Hospital for treatment," said Arrojado.

Since 1991, the group -- armed with mostly improvised explosive devices, mortars and automatic rifles -- has carried out bombings, kidnappings, assassinations and extortions in a self-determined fight for an independent Islamic province in the Philippines.
