NEW YORK (AA) — A plane skidded off a runway Thursday while attempting to land at a New York City airport during a snow storm.
Delta Air Lines said flight 1086 from Atlanta that was carrying 125 passengers and five crew members, exited the snowy runway and crashed into a seawall fence at LaGuardia Airport at 11.05 a.m. (GMT 1605).
Pictures published by local media showed the plane slid off the side of the runway and stopped just before falling into Flushing Bay.
The city's fire department said 24 people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, three of whom were transported to nearby hospitals.
The airport was closed and is scheduled to reopen at 7 p.m. local time, said Federal Aviation Administration said.
The airline said it was investigating the incident with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which manages the airport
Much of northeastern U.S. has been hit by a fresh wave of late winter weather that has brought huge amounts of snow and ice. Government offices in Washington were closed Thursday.
Snowfall totals of 5-10 inches are possible for some areas, the National Weather Service warned.
