Plo To Convene On Plan To End Israeli Occupation

01.10.2014 10:17

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is due to convene Wednesday under Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah to discuss the latter's proposal to resort a U.N. Security Council resolution on ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is due to convene Wednesday under Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah to discuss the latter's proposal to resort a U.N. Security Council resolution on ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands.

"The meeting would bring together members from the PLO's executive committee, the central committee of Fatah and secretaries of Palestinian factions," senior PLO member Wassel Abu Youssef told Anadolu Agency.

"The meeting would tackle the latest political developments in the Palestinian territories as well as a plan to resort to the Security Council for a resolution on a specific date for the end of Israeli occupation," he added.

In his speech to the U.N. General Assembly on Friday, Abbas called for a resolution on a timetable for ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.

"Israel refuses to end its occupation of the State of Palestine since 1967, but rather seeks its continuation and entrenchment, and rejects the Palestinian state and refuses to find a just solution to the plight of the Palestine refugees," Abbas told the U.N. meeting.

The roots of the Israel-Palestine conflict date back to 1917, when the British government, in the now-famous "Balfour Declaration," called for "the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people."

In 1948, some 700,000 Palestinians fled their homes – or were forcibly expelled by Jewish forces – after the creation of the new state of Israel, while hundreds of Palestinian villages and towns were razed to the ground.

Israel then occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the holy city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state – a move never recognized by the international community.

Palestinians, for their part, continue to demand the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with East Jerusalem – currently occupied by Israel – as its capital.

Following Israel's 51-day offensive against the Gaza Strip in August, Abbas tabled a plan to obtain a U.N. Security Council resolution on ending Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory within a specific time frame.

The blueprint calls on the U.S. and Israel to recognize a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also includes a timetable for ending the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

The Israeli offensive ended late August month with the announcement of an indefinite cease-fire. The agreement calls for opening all border crossings between the Gaza Strip and Israel – which, if implemented, would effectively end the latter's seven-year blockade of the coastal territory.

Israel's devastating onslaught left around 2,150 Palestinians dead, mostly civilians, and injured 11,000.
