The tension around the mosque construction, which is continuing in Validebağ grove in Istanbul's Üsküdar district has escalated when riot police intervened the protesting group consisting of local residents and environmentalists, who once attempted to prevent works at the site. A big quarrel between the group and police teams heated up again when protesting group, who have been resisting in front of the construction site since days, tried to block the road connecting the site to the grove. Controversy between environmentalists and residents of the Altunizade neighborhood and Üsküdar Municipality, who began demolishing the parking lot outside of the protected forested area to construct a mosque in its place, has been continuing since one week. Many environmentalists worry that the construction of a mosque is a tactic to move closer to the Validebağ Grove and deeming the construction of another mosque to be unnecessary, claiming there are already several within the area.
