Approximately 20 police officers raided the İzmit office of Kimse Yok Mu, a charitable organization, early on Wednesday as part of a government-led operation targeting the faith-based Gülen movement.

Kimse Yok Mu, the largest volunteer and global aid organization based in Turkey, is sympathetic to the Gülen movement, which is popularly known as the Hizmet movement and was inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen.

The raid took place in İzmit's Yenişehir neighborhood at around 9 a.m. Officers from the Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Bureau (KOM) examined computers and documents belonging to the charity in detail.

İsmail Cingöz, the president of Kimse Yok Mu, condemned the raid on the İzmit branch on the organization's official Twitter account, stating: "We at Kimse Yok Mu struggle to provide for the needs of orphans, the poor and the downtrodden. We have nothing to do with unlawful transactions."

Members of the organization also reacted to the raid, tweeting, “Donation drives by our organization, which is being subjected to a politically motivated smear campaign, have been banned [by the government] without any justification.”

İzmit branch head Mevlüt Topçu spoke to the Cihan news agency on Wednesday, condemning the raid. “This is clearly an operation to change public perception. A branch of an organization that has done the most favorable and well-directed charity work in the world has been raided for the obvious reason of distracting society's attention from other incidents taking place in the country,” Topçu said, referring to recent terrorist attacks by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Regarding the upcoming Eid al-Adha holiday, Topçu emphasized: “This raid aimed at damaging the organization's reputation ahead of the holiday in order to prevent people from making donations.”

Police and inspectors also raided the Gebze Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (GESİAD) at approximately 8:30 a.m., and carried out a detailed inspection until 2:30 p.m.

Kimse Yok Mu became a target of the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) ongoing campaign to smear the Gülen movement after a major graft probe was made public on Dec. 17, 2013, implicating members of the AK Party and others in then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's inner circle. Erdoğan and the AK Party have accused those sympathetic to the Gülen movement, particularly members of the police force and the judiciary, of having instigated the investigation in an attempt to overthrow the government, though no evidence has been provided to support this allegation.

In May 2014, Erdoğan publicly vowed, “We will not even give water [to the movement's members].” He also promised to carry out a “witch hunt” against anyone with links to the movement, and has ordered officials in AK Party-run municipalities to seize land and buildings belonging to the Gülen movement by any means necessary. The movement strongly denies the allegation and no indictment has been brought against it.
