Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu was in İstanbul on Sunday to attend the inauguration of the Aksaray-Yenikapı metro line.
This new metro line connects İstanbul Atatürk Airport with the Marmaray line, which brings together İstanbul's Asian and European sides via an undersea commuter train tunnel, and the Taksim-Yenikapı metro line.
Speaking during the ceremony, Davutoğlu said it is the government's duty to both protect İstanbul's cultural assets and to make the city more livable. He reiterated the fact that İstanbul's transportation system has improved dramatically both above ground and below ground during the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) terms in power.
“Metro lines totaling 141 kilometers were built over the last 10 years. This figure will increase to 430 kilometers in 2019 and even more in the future,” Davutoğlu said.
He also stated that the metro line inaugurated on Sunday connects north, east and west İstanbul, and added that the government is making an effort to provide İstanbulites with ever more transport options.
