Militants loyal to embattled Yemeni President Abdu Rabbuh Mansour Hadi on Saturday recaptured strategic locations in the central province of Taizz, eyewitnesses have said.
They added that militants affiliated with the Shiite Houthi group reacted by shelling residential areas in the province.
Recaptured sites included the party headquarters of ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the province's administrative building, the eyewitnesses told The Anadolu Agency.
They added that a Houthi tank then moved and indiscriminately shelled residential areas in Taizz city after losing some places to the pro-Hadi militants.
AA could not immediately obtain comments from the Houthi group.
Pro-Hadi militants have been fighting against Houthis in Taizz city for several days now.
The clashes have left casualties behind on both sides.
Positions of the Shiite Houthi group have been the target of attacks by warplanes from countries participating in a Saudi-led coalition against the Shiite group since March 26.
On Tuesday, the command of the Saudi-led coalition said it would suspend operations at Hadi's request.
Nevertheless, coalition warplanes continued to pound Houthi positions across Yemen in the following days.
