Pro-Palestinian Jewish Activist Detained In Austria For Protesting Israel's War On Gaza

06.05.2024 19:57

Sonnenbaum, member of 'Not In Our Name' group known for its support for Palestine, was arrested while protesting conference at Federal Chancellery.

Jewish activist David Sonnenbaum was detained in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Monday for holding a banner reading "No platform for genocide" before the "Antisemitism Conference" at the Federal Chancellery.

Sonnenbaum, a member of the "Not In Our Name" group, which is well-known in the country for its effective support for Palestine, protested the conference, which began on Monday at the Federal Chancellery.

He poured red paint on the building's entrance while holding a banner that read "No platform for genocide," highlighting the over 34,000 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip.

In a video message, the group condemned the conference, saying Tel Aviv is attempting to suppress criticism of Israel's ongoing assault on the Gaza Strip.

Israel's far-right government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, has used starvation and epidemics as weapons, making Gaza uninhabitable and committing "genocide" according to UN conventions.

"Terror against Palestinian civilians has already cost more than 14,000 innocent children's lives. Journalists who expose these facts are censored and banned from entering Israel," the statement said, condemning the situation as Jewish activists around the world protest Israeli military actions in the enclave.
