Sydney Morning Herald Editor-in-Chief Darren Goodsir has said the fact that journalists are being arrested in Turkey is saddening and worrying, calling on the Turkish government to release Samanyolu Broadcasting Group CEO Hidayet Karaca, who has been under arrest since Dec. 19 of last year.

Speaking during a conference organized on Tuesday by the Affinity Intercultural Foundation operating in Australia, Goodsir said Turkey has been constantly regressing each year in terms of democracy and human rights and added that Karaca should be released as soon as possible.

Karaca, who is currently being held in Silivri Prison without any indictment or reason for the extension of his arrest, was detained as part of a major media crackdown on Dec. 14, 2014, just three days before the first anniversary of the massive corruption investigations of Dec. 17 and 25. He has been under arrest since Dec. 19, 2014.

Goodsir also said the government tries to silence the voice of the public by putting journalists behind bars, adding that no one should fear the public's voice in a truly democratic country.
