Prosecutor Seeks Life For Suspected Killer Of Gezi Protester

26.11.2014 13:20

A prosecutor conducting an investigation into the death of a 19-year-old Gezi protester in Eskişehir presented his final opinion on Wednesday to a panel of judges at a local court in Kayseri, seeking life imprisonment on charges of premeditated murder for the suspected killer, policeman Mevlüt Saldoğan.

The fifth hearing in the trial into the death of university student Ali İsmail Korkmaz was held on Wednesday at the Kayseri 3rd High Criminal Court, where the suspects are standing trial for murder. The prosecutor asked the court to sentence police officer Saldoğan -- who is suspected of brutally beating Korkmaz and causing his death after the student participated in the Gezi Park protests -- to life in prison.

The prosecutor also seeks up to 16 years imprisonment for police officer Yalçın Akbulut on charges of willfully causing serious injury and death and up to 12 years in prison for baker İsmail Koyuncu and his relative Ramazan Koyuncu on charges of willfully causing serious injury.

The prosecutor said Korkmaz was kicked while on Sanayi Street in Eskişehir on June 2. According to the prosecutor, after the victim fell down, the suspects continued to kick and beat him and Saldoğan kicked Korkmaz three times, in the head and the chest, leading to the teen's death.
The prosecutor requested the acquittal of police officers Şaban Gökpınar and Hüseyin Engin due to a lack of evidence.

Korkmaz suffered from brain hemorrhaging after being beaten by the men, who were in street clothes, as he fled police during a demonstration in Eskişehir in support of the Gezi Park protests.

He fought for his life for 38 days at a hospital before passing away. The attack on Korkmaz further stoked tensions that had erupted late in May over a government plan to demolish İstanbul's Gezi Park in Taksim Square and replace it with a replica of an Ottoman-era barracks.

Before falling into the coma and subsequently losing his life, Korkmaz gave details about the attack to the authorities, saying: “Five or six people came up to me. They beat me with clubs, hitting my head, back, shoulder and legs. I fell to the ground. … Yesterday, I didn't have difficulty speaking, but today I can't remember. One of my teeth is loose because of the incident. My head hurts, I have difficulty speaking. I don't know who beat me or why. They were wearing civilian clothes. I want to file a complaint.”

Mother: I am proud of my son

The parents of Korkmaz also spoke after the prosecutor presented his opinion. Father Şahap Korkmaz said medical reports have shown that all of the suspects were involved in the killing of his son. “There is no reason to not call these people murderers,” he said. “We want justice to be served.”
The slain teen's mother, Emel Korkmaz, said: “I lost my son 18 months ago. It is the fifth time [trial hearing] that I have to face these murderers. You [suspects] will live with this label of murderer. I am proud of my son.”
