Prosecutors Say Co-Pilot Hid Illness From Germanwings

Prosecutors Say Co-Pilot Hid Illness From Germanwings

27.03.2015 14:17

Prosecutors investigating the crash of Germanwings flight 4U9525 have said a medical condition should have kept the co-pilot out of the cockpit on the day of the crash. The disaster in the French Alps killed 150 people. Prosecutors in Düsseldorf said on Friday that searches of the co-pilot's flat in the western German city and his family's home in the small town of Montabaur in Rhineland-Palatinate, had failed to turn up any letter declaring his intention to crash the plane or commit suicide.

"However, documents of a medical nature were seized, which point to an existing illness and medical treatment," a statement released by prosecutor Ralf Herrenbrück said. He added that the torn up sick notes for the day of the crash supported "the current preliminary assessment that the deceased hid his illness from his employer and colleagues."

No details about the nature of the medical condition were given.

The news comes a day after French prosecutors investigating the crash said that the co-pilot, 27-year-old Andreas Lubitz had deliberately steered the Airbus A320 into the side of a mountain in the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.
