At least one person has died after a boat carrying refugees sank Tuesday in the Aegean Sea off Turkey's western Izmir province.
The Turkish Coast Guard said they rescued 43 people following the incident off Cesme district, and a search-and-rescue operation was underway to find a missing refugee.
Most of the refugees attempting to reach the Greek island of Chios were Syrians, they added.
At least 3,138 refugees, including the 291 in the Aegean Sea, have died crossing the Mediterranean Sea so far this year, according International Organization for Migration (IOM).
According to the UNHCR, the total number of arrivals in 2015 so far in Europe via the Mediterranean is now over 643,000. - Ankara
