Ruling Party Leader Killed İn Burundi's Ongoing Mayhem

04.08.2015 21:33

Shooting of local official latest in more than 100 deaths as political violence spirals.

A local leader of Burundi's ruling party was killed on Tuesday, two days after the country's intelligence chief was killed in the capital, officials said.

Come Harerimana, president of the CNDD-FDD branch in Kanyosha to the south of capital Bujumbura, was shot dead by unidentified men and he died on the spot, party official Juvenal Ntiruhava told Anadolu Agency.

Local media reported the gunmen shot Harerimana as he rode a motorcycle near Bujumbura.

On Sunday, General Adolphe Nshimirimana, a close aide to President Pierre Nkurunziza, was killed when his vehicle was targeted in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in the capital.

Since then, a series of armed attacks in Bujumbura and its outskirts have resulted in a number of deaths.

Local sources told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday that unidentified gunmen killed five people in two separate attacks on Monday night in Bujumbura.

On Monday, human rights activist Pierre Claver Mbonimpa was shot and seriously injured in an attack. He was a harsh critic of Nkurunziza.

Since demonstrations erupted in April against Nkurunziza - who went on to win a third term as president in July 21 polls widely boycotted by the opposition - more than 100 people have reportedly been killed across Burundi in simmering political violence. - Bujumbura
