Amid an embargo on food imports from EU countries, Russia has decided to remove the duty on Iranian fruits and vegetables, according to a report in the Dünya daily on Thursday.

Following EU sanctions imposed on Russia for its annexation of Crimea in March, Russia retaliated by imposing trade embargos on various European countries, which has left many of those countries with a large surplus of goods.

In spite of the elimination of the import duty, İstanbul Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Union President Latif Ünal doesn't think that Russia will be replacing Turkey with Iran as a major source of its produce. “They [Iran] have a wide selection of products as well. Watermelons, kiwis, pomegranates, apples and pears are among the variety of products found there. However that doesn't mean that they will begin importing from there and all of a sudden stop imports from [Turkey],” Ünal was quoted as saying by Dünya. He said that according to his understanding, the move was part of a general attempt by Russia to ease customs regulations with its neighboring countries.
