Russian Airstrikes Kill Five İn Syria's Idlib

26.11.2015 19:03

Five people are killed when Russian warplanes strike targets in opposition held area of Syria's northwestern Idlib province.

Five people were killed and another six injured Thursday when Russian warplanes struck targets in an opposition-held area of Syria's northwestern Idlib province, which shares a border with Turkey, Syrian Civil Defense sources told Anadolu Agency.

According to the sources, Russian warplanes struck a residential area and a main road in Idlib's Maaret al-Numan district, along with roads used to bring humanitarian assistance into northern Syria from Turkey.

Local sources in Aleppo and Idlib, meanwhile, told Anadolu Agency that Russian warplanes had also targeted a road linking the town of Sarmada to Bab al-Hawa (Cilvegozu), leaving at least one person dead.

Russian warplanes also struck the road linking Aleppo province's Azaz district with the Bab al-Salam border crossing (also known as Oncupinar) with Turkey.

One day earlier, Russian warplanes struck an aid convoy delivering supplies to Syrian refugees, killing seven drivers and leaving 20 trucks in flames in Azaz.

Russia began air operations in Syria on Sept. 30 with the aim of supporting the embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

While the Kremlin says the airstrikes target the Daesh militant group, some members of the western NATO alliance believe Russia is targeting groups opposed to Assad, including some that enjoy U.S. and Turkish support. - Suriye
