S. Leone's Vice President Quarantined Over Ebola Fears

01.03.2015 00:33

One of his bodyguards has died of Ebola.

Sierra Leone's Vice President Alhaji Sam Sumana has been quarantined until March 18 over fears of Ebola.

The move came after one of his bodyguards had fallen ill with Ebola symptoms while on duty and died within 24 hours.

A post-mortem exam showed the bodyguard had Ebola.

The Vice President's office has been disinfected while other bodyguards who had worked directly with the deceased have been quarantined.

In a statement Saturday, Sumana assured the public he was healthy and expected to return back to work after his quarantine ends on March 18.

Over the course of the last year, Ebola – a contagious disease for which there is no known treatment or cure – has killed nearly 9,604 people, mostly in West Africa, according to a Feb. 25 World Health Organization (WHO) status report.

In Sierra Leone, Ebola has claimed at least 3,461 lives.

President Ernest Bai Koroma has recently reinstated a ban on the number of passengers allowed on public transport and introduced new restriction on maritime activities.
