The UN Mission in South Sudan on Tuesday accused government officials in Juba of preventing relief workers from leaving their headquarters in Bentiu, regional capital of the northwestern Unity State.

"Over the past few days, aid workers based in Bentiu… have been prevented from leaving the UN base to carry out their work in Bentiu town and in surrounding neighborhoods and villages," UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan Toby Lanzer said at a press conference.

"This hinders life-saving assistance, including medical support, for people struck by the conflict," Lanzer said, calling on the country's warring camps to guarantee freedom of movement for international relief agencies operating in the war-torn country.

South Sudan, which became independent from Sudan in 2011, has been shaken by violence since late 2013, when President Salva Kiir accused Riek Machar, his sacked vice-president, of leading a failed coup attempt against his regime.

Tens of thousands have reportedly been killed in the subsequent violence, with some two million people uprooted from their homes and 2.5 million at risk of starvation, according to UN estimates.

Several months of on-again, off-again peace talks in Addis Ababa have failed to produce any breakthroughs between Kiir and Machar.
