Saudi Arrests 88 'Terrorists' İn Fresh Swoop

02.09.2014 20:18

The Saudi Interior Ministry says the apprehended suspects had been planning terror attacks inside and outside the country.

Saudi police say they have arrested 88 people, mostly Saudi and Yemeni nationals, accusing them of planning terrorist attacks both inside and outside the Gulf kingdom, according to a Tuesday statement.

"For months, pertinent monitoring bodies have tracked down all elements surrounded by suspicion, especially among those who are linked to extremist thought," read a statement issued by Saudi's Interior Ministry.

According to the statement, the arrest campaign included 84 Saudis, three Yemenis and one unidentified person, adding that 59 of those detained had been arrested previously for suspected links to Al-Qaeda.

Last week, Saudi authorities announced that they had arrested eight people northwest of capital Riyadh, who, they said, had been involved in recruiting people in Saudi Arabia for extremist groups operating abroad.

The arrest campaign comes against the backdrop of a royal decree issued in March blacklisting eight groups, including the Shiite Houthi group and the Muslim Brotherhood group.

The decree criminalizes membership in any of the eight proscribed groups.
