The security chief of Libya's northwestern city of Siburata was gunned down on Sunday by unknown militants, the Libyan Interior Ministry said.
It added that police colonel Hassan Kamouka was shot several times outside his home in Siburata.
"We will arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Libya is quickly turning into a dangerous country almost two weeks after fierce fighting erupted in the capital Tripoli between militias and troops loyal to retired general Khalifa Haftar.
Foreign diplomats are leaving Libya in droves, while foreign governments advise their nationals against staying in the country, which has been suffering turmoil since the downfall of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011.
