In a horrific attack in Tullahoma, Tennessee, 50-year-old James Alexander Smith and his 3-month-old granddaughter were killed by seven pit bull dogs that entered their home. According to reports, the grandfather and the baby were found by police in a dismembered state.
THEY WERE STILL ATTACKING WHEN POLICE ARRIVED
According to a statement from the Tullahoma Police Department, when the officers arrived at the scene, they saw that the dogs were still attacking Smith and the little baby. The police had to shoot the pit bulls to stop the attack, but it was determined that Smith and his granddaughter had died at the scene.
In a report by The Independent, the District Attorney's Office stated that the incident was "extremely difficult and brutal," and requested support for the victim's family and the first responders who are trying to cope with the trauma.
The investigation into the deaths of the grandfather and his granddaughter is looking into whether the dogs had shown any history of violent behavior and whether the Department of Child Services had taken any action regarding the family in the past.
A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN LAUNCHED FOR THE FAMILY
Brian Kirby, a neighbor who witnessed the incident, said he saw a woman screaming in the street and when he went to help her, she quickly ran back into her house. According to Kirby, a few seconds later, police officers arrived at the scene and subdued the pit bulls.
After the incident, a family member named Ely Cournoyer started a fundraising campaign for the mother of the deceased baby. Cournoyer stated that the family lost their belongings and sense of security after the attack, and that Smith did not have life insurance, so the funeral expenses had to be covered by the family.
