Soldier Killed İn Central Mali Attack

A soldier was killed Tuesday in an attack on an army site in central Mali's town of Tenenkou.



"One soldier was killed and three others injured," an army officer, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency.



He said six militants had also been killed – and three vehicles destroyed – in the attack.



A spokesperson for the UN's mission in Mali confirmed the incident, but could provide no details about casualties.



Attaye Ag Abdoulahi, a spokesman for the separatist Coalition for the People of Azawad, claimed responsibility for the attack.



"Our people destroyed the [army] site and killed a large number of troops," he told AA, adding that no casualties had been reported among his group's fighters.



Mali slipped into violence in 2012 following a failed coup attempt and a Tuareg rebellion that allowed Al-Qaeda-linked militants to take over the northern half of the country.



In early 2013, former colonial power France sent troops to the North African country and – with the help of Chadian and other African forces – flushed Islamist militants from Mali's main northern cities.
