Somali government forces backed by African Union (AU) peacekeeping troops have retaken a number of towns in central Somalia as a major offensive to dislodge the insurgents continued.

The allied forces captured several towns in the Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions from the militant Al-Shabaab fighters as the troops advanced to the strategic town of Jalalaqsi.

"On 30th August 2014 the joint forces liberated several location including a crossroad along Dangaras which connects several towns in Middle Shabelle region and Kiliga Shiinaha and went ahead to liberate the town of Fidow in Hiraan region," the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said in a statement.

Officials said the forces have faced "little resistance" from the fighters who fled the area as the advancing forces approached the towns and villages the militants controlled.

Somali government commanders vowed that "the forces will relentlessly keep up the pressure on Al-Shabaab" adding that they will "employ all the means at their disposal" to end what they termed as Al-Shabaab's reign of terror.

AMISOM commanders said the main target of the aligned forces was the town of Jalalaqsi in Hiiran region which the militants have used as a base to launch attacks on Somali forces and AMISOM.

This comes after the announcement last month of start of Operation Indian Ocean, final offensive to retake the remaining town from Al-Shabaab in south and center of Somalia.

A number of towns and villages were also captured from Al- Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle region in south of Somalia. The forces aim to take the port town of Barawe, the main base of the militants in southern Somalia.

Officials say Operation Indian Ocean was aimed at "liberating more towns" to help the government expand its control and help ease humanitarian suffering of the population. (Cihan/Xinhua)
