Spanish Police Arrest Three İn Connection With Daesh

28.11.2015 16:33

Two men and one woman held for alleged involvement in recruiting for extremist group.

Spanish police have arrested two men and a woman for alleged involvement in recruiting for Daesh.

The two men, both Moroccan nationals, aged 32 and 42, were arrested in Barcelona early Saturday morning.

The Spanish Home Office said the pair "dedicated themselves to spreading the extremist ideas of Daesh on the internet and recruiting followers to send them to conflict zones."

The pair shared an apartment near the city's Sagrada Familia church.

The woman, a 24-year-old Catalan, was arrested in Granollers, Catalonia.

She was described as having gone through a radicalization process and "wanted to join the terrorist extremists on an imminent journey," according to the Home Office.

The woman was just about to leave for Afghanistan where she planned on joining the ranks of Daesh, according to La Vanguardia newspaper.

According to the Home Office, investigators want to untangle the structure of this entire network, which has been operating to attract people and aid them in joining Daesh.

These are the second arrests made in Spain since the Nov. 13 Paris attacks.

The first took place on Nov. 23, in which Spanish police charged a man, who was already in a prison in Segovia, with recruiting terrorists and threatening to bomb Madrid and Barcelona.

Changing face of Spanish militants

According to a recent study on the new profile of terrorists in Spain published by El Cano think tank, the number of women joining such networks has grown over the years.

Since 2013, 15% of those detained in relation to Daesh-type terrorism were women, data suggests.

The study, released earlier this month, also suggests that Spain is becoming a hotspot in Europe for homegrown terrorism.

Almost half of 120 people arrested on charges related to extremist terrorism were Spanish nationals, according to the report.

This figure is three times higher than it was between 1996 and 2012, when most people detained for this type of terrorism were born abroad. - Madrid
