The DEM Party issued a condolence message regarding the late Sırrı Süreyya Önder. We will honor his memory and uphold the peace struggle he pursued at all costs."

After suffering from heart disease, the Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and DEM Party Member of Parliament Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who was treated in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Istanbul, passed away at the age of 62. A statement from the hospital indicated that Önder died due to multiple organ failure.

WHO IS SIRRI SÜREYYA ÖNDER?

Sırrı Süreyya Önder was born on July 7, 1962, in Adıyaman, and is a Turkish director, screenwriter, producer, actor, journalist, and politician. He is a Member of Parliament for Istanbul from the DEM Party and the Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

He worked as a director, screenwriter, actor, music producer, and columnist in the national press. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Istanbul's 2nd district in the 2011 general elections, participating in the ranks of the Labor, Democracy, and Freedom Bloc (independents supported by the BDP). In the 2014 local elections, he was the HDP's candidate for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality mayoralty but did not win. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from Ankara's 1st district in the June 2015 and November 2015 general elections, participating in the ranks of the HDP. He served as a Member of Parliament for Istanbul in the 24th, 25th, and 26th terms and was elected as a Member of Parliament for the 28th term from the DEM Party in the 2023 general elections. He passed away on May 3, 2025.
