Sudan Police Disperse Protesters İn Darfur

14.09.2014 16:18

Sudanese police on Sunday dispersed hundreds of teachers and students in Al Fashir, the largest city in the restive western Darfur region.

Sudanese police on Sunday dispersed hundreds of teachers and students in Al-Fashir, the largest city in the restive western Darfur region.

"Policemen used teargas to disperse the demonstrators who gathered at the city's main market to protest deteriorating school services and overdue salaries," an eyewitness told Anadolu Agency.

Activists have circulated photos on social websites showing protesters being teargased by Sudanese police.

Teachers have staged a strike last week to pile pressures on the government to meet their demands.

Darfur has been ravaged by a deadly conflict since three rebel groups took up arms against the Khartoum government in 2003.

The U.N., which has described the situation in Darfur as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, has said that an estimated 300,000 people had been killed in the conflict and some 1.8 million displaced.

The Sudanese government, however, insists that the death toll does not exceed 10,000 people.
