The Supreme Military Council (YAŞ), headed by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, is to convene on Monday to tackle various issues in the military, including the promotions of high-ranking staff officers and generals.
The decisions to be made by the council, which will hold a final meeting on Wednesday, will be announced to the public after being presented to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The council has 13 members and consists of senior generals, including the chief of general staff and four service commanders, as well as two civilian members: the prime minister and the minister of defense.
The YAŞ meeting, which will be held at the general staff headquarters in Ankara, will be attended by Davutoğlu, Defense Minister Vecdi Gönül, Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel, Land Forces Cdr. Hulusi Akar, Naval Forces Cdr. Bülent Bostanoğlu, Air Forces Cdr. Akın Öztürk, Gendarmerie General Command Cdr. Abdullah Atay, Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Güler and other members of the council. With this meeting, the services of Özel, Bostanoğlu, Öztürk and Atay will end.
According to military practice, Akar will replace Özel, who has already started making farewell visits. He announced that he will leave his office by Aug. 14, rather than in the last week of the month. Akar will serve until Aug. 2019.
