01.04.2015 00:18

Jose Guadalupe Reyes Rivera is believed to have masterminded killings of 58 men, 14 women in 2010.

A member of a drug gang has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the 2010 massacre of 72 migrants, the National Safety Commission of Mexico said Tuesday.

Authorities said Jose Guadalupe Reyes Rivera is one of the orchestrators of the murders of 58 men and 14 women in the municipality of San Fernando, in the state of Tamaulipas that borders the U.S. state of Texas.

Reyes Rivera was arrested Monday in Ciudad Victoria, in Tamaulipas and was transferred to a jail in Matamoros where he will be formally questioned.

The Mexican attorney general's office offered a reward of up to $525,000 for anyone who provided information that lead to Reyes Rivera's arrest.

His capture came on the same night as a shootout between two opposing vigilant groups left at least three dead and 11 injured in the town of San Juan del Reparo, in the southwestern state of Guerrero.

The clash was between members of the Union of Peoples and Organizations of Guerrero or Upoeg, and the United Front for Security and Social Development of Guerrero, or Fusdeg. The Fusdeg group was created in February after a split with Upoeg.

State government sources told local media that tensions began with the two groups verbally sparing on Monday afternoon, escalating to gunshots later in the night.

None of the dead were members of either group but the injured, members of the vigilantes, are being treated at hospitals in Acapulco.
