Officials of the İstanbul club did not allow the additional fans to enter and those who remained outside the venue later threw stones and firecrackers at a group of Galatasaray fans. The police arrived at the scene and intervened with pepper spray. According to the police, tension between the fans inflamed and 25-year-old Marko Ivkovic was stabbed to death.

Euroleague Basketball has asked for all information concerning the ongoing investigation from the Turkish authorities and both clubs. Euroleague Basketball President and CEO Jordi Bertomeu said in a statement: “Violence has no place in our game, at our arenas or anywhere near them. It’s just the opposite. Respect between rivals dedicated to the same ideals should bring us all together. That is why we organize and play sports. Today, we must all refocus on those ideals.”

Crvena Zvezda Belgrade dedicated the homepage of its website to the deceased and expressed its sorrow over his death. The Turkish Ministry of Youth and Sports also issued a message offering its condolences to the victim’s family, Crvena Zvezda and the entire Serbian nation.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray coach Ergin Ataman had apologized for his earlier remarks over the incidents outside the Abdi İpekçi Arena. He had called the trouble-makers “terrorists.” In a statement issued on the club’s website on Saturday, Ataman said he did not know about the death of the fan when he delivered his previous remarks.

“I extend my condolences to Crvena Zvezda and its fans. I’m deeply saddened. Such a tragedy has no place in sports and normal life. I was not informed about the fan’s death during the post-game press conference last night [Friday],” he had said.
