Suspects Sent To Court İn Turkey 'Parallel State' Operation

01.03.2015 00:03

24 suspects detained in latest parallel state operation referred to court by prosecutor, who calls for their arrest on charges of forming a criminal organization and official misconduct, among others.

Ankara prosecutor's office sent 24 out of 33 suspects to court demanding their arrest after they were detained in the latest "parallel state" operation launched in the capital along with several other provinces, officials said Saturday.

A total of 28 suspected policemen were brought Saturday to Ankara court for questioning, with 5 other suspects surrendering on the same day.

The prosecutor's office freed 9 others and charged the 24 suspects with "establishing a crime organization," "breaching private life," "slander," and "official misconduct."

Earlier on Wednesday, the Ankara prosecutor's office ordered the detention of 54 suspects in 20 provinces, including the capital, Konya, Bolu, Duzce, Hakkari and Diyarbakir provinces.

Authorities have launched large-scale operations and carried out numerous arrests against what the government calls the "parallel state," a movement allegedly led by U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gulen and his supporters.

The "parallel state" is a purported group of Turkish bureaucrats and senior officials embedded in the country's institutions, including the judiciary and police, who are allegedly trying to undermine the Turkish government.
