Syrian Opposition Leader To Meet Egypt Fm

22.10.2014 17:48

The Egyptian government has yet to officially announce al Bahra's upcoming visit.

Syrian opposition leader Hadi al-Bahra will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo on October 30 to discuss recent developments in Syria, a Syrian opposition figure said Wednesday.

"Al-Bahra's upcoming one-day visit to Cairo will discuss the Syrian opposition coalition's vision for a political solution to the three-and-a-half-year conflict in Syria," Abdel-Hamid al-Zawbani, a spokesman for the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, told Anadolu Agency.

The Egyptian government has yet to officially announce al-Bahra's upcoming visit.

Al-Zawbani did not elaborate as to whether Shoukry would table an Egyptian proposal to end the Syrian conflict amid media reports that a Cairo-led Arab initiative to settle the conflict was in the pipeline.

One source said the reported initiative would entail the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his departure from Syria, along with his family and main allies.

The initiative would also entail, the source added, that the Syrian opposition join a U.S.-led coalition aimed at combatting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant militant group, which recently captured large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

The National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces was founded in 2012 with the aim of unifying support for opposition to al-Assad, raising funds to support the Syrian people, and establishing a transitional government in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since early 2011. More than 191,000 people have been killed in the conflict to date, according to the U.N.
