Syrian Regime Kills 73, Activists Say

19.04.2014 11:47

Forces loyal to Assad launch attacks using barrel bombs filled with chlorine gas.

Syrian regime killed 73 people in offensives on several cities across the country on Friday, activists said.

Syrian Network for Human Rights, a London-based human rights group that tracks civilian and dissident casualties, said forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad launched air and ground assaults in a number of opposition-held areas, killing 30 in Aleppo, 18 in Homs, 10 in Idlib, nine in Damascus, three in Hama, two in Deiz-ez Zor and one in Daraa.

Another activist group, Syrian Revolution General Commission, claimed that hundreds of people were affected by a series of barrel bomb attacks conducted by a regime helicopter in the city of Kafr Zeta in Homs.

The bombs, which were filled with chlorine gas, caused visual impairment, vomiting and pupil constriction in hundreds of victims, the group said.

Tallies of those killed in Syria's three-year long conflict vary. The UN stopped updating its tally after an official count became too difficult to ascertain. Its last reported toll was at least 100,000.
