Tahir Elçi Laid To Rest In Diyarbakır

The head of Diyarbakır Bar Association, Tahir Elçi, who was killed in attack during press release in Diyarbakır on Saturday, was laid to rest at Yeniköy graveyard in the southeastern district of Diyarbakır’s Bağlar on Sunday.The funeral of Elçi was brought from Koşuyolu Park, in which the funeral ceremony.

The head of Diyarbakır Bar Association, Tahir Elçi, who was killed in attack during press release in Diyarbakır on Saturday, was laid to rest at Yeniköy graveyard in the southeastern district of Diyarbakır’s Bağlar on Sunday.

The funeral of Elçi was brought from Koşuyolu Park, in which the funeral ceremony was held, to graveyard with thousands of people.

Many of people, who was standing at their houses’ windows, supported the funeral cortege with the applauses. The crowd, who were attached the photo of Elçi on their necks, chanted slogans, saying ‘Martyrs are immortal/ (Şehit namirin in Kurdish)’.

After being carried on shoulders about one-kilometer, the funeral of Elçi was buried following the afternoon prayer.

Noticeably, not any governor or any members of ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) attended the funeral. Along with the United States Adana consul Linda Specht, many of non-governmental organizations’ and human rights organizations’ representatives attended the funeral.
