Taiwan Worried After İts Flag Appears İn Daesh Video

25.11.2015 15:33

Daesh video displaying dozens of flags including Taiwan's leads president to appeal to public for calm.

A newly released Daesh propaganda video showing the Taiwanese flag next to that of the United States has led the country to increase security amid concerns it may be a target.

Taiwan's state Central News Agency (CNA) reported Wednesday that the video had prompted President Ma Ying-jeou to appeal to the public for calm.

Ma said he had held a National Security Council meeting last week following the deadly Paris attacks, and had told security agencies to remain alert.

The video released by the terrorist organization shows images of explosions and -- in one frame -- displays dozens of flags who are members of the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Counter Daesh.

The narrator in the video calls it a "coalition of devils",  saying "we're counting your banners, which our prophet said would reach 80 in number, and then the flames of war will finally burn you on the hills of Dabiq. Bring it on."

Taiwan's Defense Ministry spokesman Major Gen. David Lo declared in a press conference that the ministry "will make appropriate responses" in accordance with government instructions.

Taiwan is providing humanitarian aid and emergency relief as part of the global anti-terror campaign -- but is not involved in military operations.

The Ministry of National Defense also announced Wednesday that it will continue to monitor global conditions and "respond cautiously" ahead of presidential elections scheduled for Jan. 16.
