Thai Army Chief Defends Martial Law

31.10.2014 13:24

Thailand's army chief Udomdej Sitabutr said Friday that it was still necessary for the martial law to remain effective in the country to keep away turbulence amid calls for the special law to be waived, especially in tourist hotspots. The martial law, imposed since the May 22 coup, has not affected.

Thailand's army chief Udomdej Sitabutr said Friday that it was still necessary for the martial law to remain effective in the country to keep away turbulence amid calls for the special law to be waived, especially in tourist hotspots.
The martial law, imposed since the May 22 coup, has not affected people's daily life, and unrest will likely occur if it is lifted, Udomdej, who is also deputy defense minister, was quoted by Bangkok Post as saying.
It is necessary for the authorities to adopt the most suitable measures to maintain order, he said, urging the public to allow more time for the government and coup-making National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).
Prime Minister and NCPO chief Prayut Chan-o-cha has not committed himself to saying how soon the martial law may be lifted, even at major tourist spots such as Pattaya, Phuket and Samui Island, where a large number of visitors are expected during the high season from October to April.
He has maintained that"political undertows"and opposing sides of the society might possibly rise up and revolt against his military-led government at any time.
In a separate development, the National Anti-Corruption Commission on Friday disclosed the declared assets and liabilities of members of the Prayut cabinet, with the premier declaring 128 million baht (3.9 million U.S. dollars) in net assets and around 650,000 baht in debt.
Deputy Prime Minister Pridiyathorn Devakula and PM's Office Minister ML Panadda Diskul turned out to be the richest in the cabinet, who declared 1.38 and 1.31 billion baht in assets, respectively, with no liabilities. (Cihan/Xinhua)
