French President Emmanuel Macron warned against disinformation on social media following the spread of a video produced by artificial intelligence that depicts a coup in France.
MACRON'S WARNING AGAINST AI-GENERATED "COUP" VIDEO
In a speech at an event hosted by La Provence newspaper in Marseille, Macron stated that an African head of state reached out to him regarding the spread of the AI-generated video that suggests a coup has taken place in France on the social media platform Facebook.
HE LEARNED ABOUT IT THROUGH A MESSAGE
Macron mentioned that on Sunday, "one of his African colleagues" sent him a message saying, "Dear President, what is happening in your country? I am very worried," explaining that people believed there was actually a coup in France due to the AI video that has been viewed millions of times on Facebook.
THEY REQUESTED THE REMOVAL OF THE VIDEO
Macron stated that they requested Facebook to remove the video spreading disinformation, but the social media platform refused to take it down, citing that it did not violate its "terms of service." He described the spread of such videos and the inability to prevent this dissemination as a "danger" for democracies and warned against disinformation on social media.
In this context, Macron emphasized that they would continue their fight at both the national and European Union (EU) levels with determination.
