The security camera footage related to the death of Jeffrey Epstein, who was arrested on charges of child abuse and human trafficking in America, has been made public for the first time six years after the incident.
This footage was recorded at the New York Metropolitan Correctional Center where Epstein was staying on August 9-10, 2019. The approximately 11-hour recording was released as part of the FBI and Department of Justice (DoJ) investigation into Epstein's death.
Epstein was found unconscious in his cell on the morning of August 10 and died at the hospital he was taken to. The autopsy indicated that he had committed suicide by hanging. The completed investigation also reached the same conclusion: not murder, but suicide.
The released footage shows Epstein being taken to his cell in an orange prison outfit by a guard at 7:49 PM on the evening of August 9. Another guard is following from behind. This footage was shared by the U.S. news site Axios.
According to the Department of Justice, the footage does not directly show the cell door, but everyone coming in and out of the cell is captured by this camera. And according to the footage, only the guards are entering and exiting the cell. No one else approaches Epstein's cell.
According to a joint statement from the FBI and the Department of Justice, no one else besides Ghislaine Maxwell will be tried or sentenced to prison in the Epstein case.
After Epstein's death, many conspiracy theories emerged in the public. People were curious about what was happening behind the scenes, and many commented that "it is being covered up."
Epstein had attempted suicide for the first time in July 2019, and was found unconscious with injuries to his neck in his cell. After this incident, he was placed on suicide watch, but after a while, this practice was lifted, and he was transferred to another cell.
Authorities had previously stated that the camera footage related to this first suicide attempt was accidentally deleted.
