Harvesting of cherries that do not fit through the tea glass bulge has begun in the Lapseki district, one of the important cherry production centers of Çanakkale.
The Lapseki district, which stands out for cherry and peach production in Çanakkale, is an important center for fruit cultivation. Producers from Lapseki have been continuing the cherry harvest for a while. The cherries collected every day are sent to the markets in Istanbul. The famous cherries of Lapseki, known for their taste and size, reach consumers' tables from here. Lapseki cherries derive their aroma from the soil structure. Recently, cherries of the 'Ziraat 900' variety, which are so large that they cannot pass through the bulge of a tea glass and are priced above 5 lira, have started to be harvested.
SELLING FOR 600-700 TL IN THE GARDEN
This year, approximately 7,000 to 10,000 decares of land are being used for cherry production in Lapseki. The 'Ziraat 900' cherries, which do not fit in a glass, are sold at prices starting from 400 TL in the market, while they are sold for 400-500 TL in the market. Cihat Gündüz, who has been engaged in cherry farming in Lapseki for 13 years, sells his cherries, which are known for their taste and size, in his garden for between 600-700 TL.
"WE ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH THE PRICES"
Gündüz, who has been engaged in cherry production for 13 years, said, "We have entered the last week of this. When it ripens and darkens, it already does not fit in the glass. The market is very good, it goes to the domestic market. People are sending gifts to their friends and relatives from here via buses. We are very satisfied with the prices. It goes for 400-500 lira in the fruit market, but we sell it for 600-700 lira at our feet. This cherry, which we call the Lapseki giant, is a cherry that does not fit in a tea glass. A good cherry grows very large. It is the earliest ripening and largest cherry. Since it comes out before the watermelon becomes too dense and before there are too many peaches, it is in high demand in the market. Care is essential. We regularly provide its calcium and potassium. Also, our district agricultural director is very interested in us. We set traps here for flies and so on. So, a good product comes out in the end," he said.
