A chilling truth has emerged regarding the disappearance of 6-year-old Joshlin Smith in South Africa. The little girl's mother sold her to a fortune teller for just £800, citing her light-colored eyes and skin. The court sentenced the mother and other defendants to life in prison for human trafficking. Meanwhile, Joshlin remains missing despite all the searches.
An incredible event in South Africa has deeply shaken the entire country. It has come to light that a 6-year-old girl named Joshlin Smith was sold by her mother to a fortune teller for only £800 (approximately 42,340 TL). The mother has been sentenced to life in prison.
DISAPPEARED IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE
According to a report by the BBC, fair-skinned and blue-eyed Joshlin Smith went missing in February in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, from in front of her home. Since that day, no trace of the little girl has been found.
MORE THAN 30 WITNESSES INTERVIEWED
While the incident caused a huge public outcry, more than 30 witnesses were interviewed during the court proceedings. The witnesses detailed the little girl's difficult living conditions and her suspicious situation before she went missing.
SOLD FOR SKIN AND EYE COLOR
At the end of the trial, the court revealed that the little girl was specifically requested by a fortune teller solely because of her skin color and eyes, and that the mother sold her daughter for about £800. This statement had a shocking effect in the courtroom.
DEFENDANTS REMAINED SILENT
Kelly Smith, Joshlin's mother, and two others on trial refused to testify and call witnesses throughout the case. Judge Nathan Erasmus, announcing the verdict, said, "You have been sentenced to life imprisonment for human trafficking. You have been sentenced to 10 years in prison for kidnapping." Following the verdict, tensions rose in the courtroom, with some spectators reacting with applause.
"GIVE ME BACK MY GRANDDAUGHTER"
Before the conviction was announced, Joshlin's grandmother, Amanda Smith-Daniels, pleaded with her daughter once again, "Bring my granddaughter back or tell me where she is." However, despite all efforts, the little girl has still not been found. Daniels stated, "My family has been shattered by this incident. The sentences will not be enough to bring my granddaughter back."
South African prosecutors say the little girl was sold into slavery, but this could not be definitively proven during the trial.
