U.S. President Donald Trump called for support for the opponent of the left-leaning Muslim candidate Zohran Mamdani in the New York City elections. Trump threatened to cut funding if Mamdani is elected.
The New York City mayoral polls will be set up today. While polls show Mamdani, who identifies himself as a "democratic socialist," in the lead, there has been a new statement from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Previously calling Mamdani a "communist lunatic," Trump stated, "If communist candidate Mamdani wins the New York mayoral election, my chances of providing federal funding beyond the necessary minimum are very low, because under a communist administration, the chances of success for this once-great city, even its chances of survival, are zero! The situation could worsen under a communist administration."
MAMDANI LEADING IN POLLS
Most of the recent polls for the New York mayoral race show Mamdani ahead of his closest rival, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, by double digits.
Mamdani, New York's first Muslim mayoral candidate, made headlines by winning the Democratic Party's primary for mayor.
Mamdani secured 56% of the votes, leaving his strongest rival within the party, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, behind by 12 points.
Known for his support for Palestine and criticism of Israel's human rights violations in Gaza, Mamdani would become New York's first Muslim and South Asian mayor if he wins the election.
The early voting process was completed yesterday in New York, and the voting will conclude on November 4. Polls will be open tomorrow from 6 AM to 9 PM.
