The nurse Menekşe Y., whose patient died as a result of a wrong blood transfusion in Nevşehir, appeared in court for the first time. In her defense at the trial, the nurse stated, "I had no intention in the incident. I mixed up the patient rooms."

Emine Ekinci (75), who underwent surgery for a broken leg at Nevşehir State Hospital in August 2023, was admitted to the orthopedic ward after the operation. Allegedly, after the surgery, the patient was given blood that was brought by the healthcare staff for another patient. The first intervention was made in the ward for the woman who fainted and whose heart stopped during the blood transfusion. Emine Ekinci was later transferred to the intensive care unit of Kayseri City Hospital. Despite all the interventions, the unfortunate woman passed away.

FIRST TIME IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE

Nurse Menekşe Y. appeared before the judge for the first time. The trial held at Nevşehir 5th Criminal Court was attended by Nurse Menekşe Y., who is being tried without detention, along with the son and daughter of the deceased Emine Ekinci. According to the forensic report submitted to the court, it was stated that "it was unanimously decided that the victim died as a result of receiving the wrong blood."

"I MIXED UP THE PATIENT ROOMS"

In her statement, Menekşe Y. said, "In the morning, I toured the patients with the doctor. Later, the doctor asked us to give potassium to Emine Ekinci and blood to Leyla A. I then requested the blood transfusion procedures in accordance with the protocol. I received the blood after conducting all necessary examinations on it. Instead of going to Leyla A.'s room, I went to Emine Ekinci's room, informed both the patient and the patient's relative, and had Emine Ekinci's relative sign the blood transfer form that belonged to Leyla A. The patient's relative did not warn me either. After starting the blood transfusion, I left the room. About 5-10 minutes later, I went back to the room upon the patient's relative's call. When I arrived, the patient had fainted and her heart had stopped. We immediately issued a blue code and performed all the necessary procedures as healthcare personnel. The patient was then admitted to the intensive care unit by the intensive care doctors. I learned that I had given the wrong blood when I returned from the intensive care unit to the orthopedic ward," she said.

WILL BE TRIED WITHOUT DETENTION

Hicran Çelik, the daughter of Emine Ekinci, who was present at the hearing, also stated that she was with her mother as a companion on the day of the incident and did not accept Nurse Menekşe Y.'s defense. Çelik said, "Nurse Menekşe Y. had me sign a number of documents before performing the blood transfer. I did not check what I was signing. I am complaining about her." It was decided that Menekşe Y. would be tried without detention and that the next hearing would be held on March 20.
