In a press conference held on Wednesday, Sheinbaum said, "My view is this: If I don't file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they do this to the President, what will happen to all women in our country?"
"THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN ONLY TO ME"
Sheinbaum indicated that she decided to file a criminal complaint regarding the incident, stating, "This is something I experienced as a woman, but at the same time, as women in our country, we are experiencing the same thing. I have experienced this before; when I was a student, not as president," she said.
The President emphasized that she would follow up on the case, asserting that the suspect harassed not only her but also other women in the crowd.

Women's rights organizations and feminist commentators stated that the incident once again highlighted the entrenched "machismo" culture in Mexico. Femicide has long been a serious social issue in Mexico. It is estimated that 98% of gender-based murders in the country go unpunished.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The incident occurred near the National Palace in Mexico City. Sheinbaum was seen on camera shaking hands with local residents while walking to the Ministry of Education building when a man attempted to hug and kiss her from behind. The assailant, Uriel Rivera Martinez, was detained by security personnel. Authorities stated that the assailant was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and was referred to the sexual crimes unit.
