In Kayseri, a Syrian national was sentenced to 24 years, 4 months, and 15 days in prison for the charge of sexual abuse against his cousin, a minor. Following the events, disturbances occurred in the city, resulting in numerous injuries and arrests.
In the Danişmentgazi neighborhood of the Melikgazi district of Kayseri, I.A. (27), a Syrian national, was arrested on the grounds of sexually abusing his cousin M.A. He was detained on July 1, 2024. Following the allegations of abuse, incidents broke out in the city, resulting in many injuries and arrests. The defendant appeared before the judge again.
"I AM INNOCENT," HE SAID
During the hearing held at the 8th High Criminal Court, the detained defendant I.A. was present with his lawyers and the lawyer from the Ministry of Family and Social Services. The prosecutor reiterated his previous opinion regarding the case, requesting the defendant to be punished for "qualified sexual abuse of a child" and "deprivation of liberty," as he allegedly committed numerous sexual abuses against the victim M.A. (8) before the incident.
In his defense, made with the assistance of a sworn translator, the defendant I.A. stated that he did not accept the opinion, saying, "The victim has returned to Syria with her family. I did not commit any act that would constitute a crime against the victim. I am innocent, and I request my acquittal." The complainant's lawyer stated that the victim and her family returned to their country, Syria, on November 5, 2024, as part of a voluntary return program, and that they could not reach them or their relatives.
HE WAS SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS IN PRISON
The complainant's lawyer and the lawyer from the Ministry of Family and Social Services stated that they were complaining about the defendant and requested his punishment. The court panel sentenced the defendant I.A. to 16 years, 10 months, and 15 days for the crime of "qualified sexual abuse of a child" and 7 years and 6 months for the crime of "deprivation of liberty," totaling 24 years, 4 months, and 15 days in prison, and ruled for the continuation of his detention.
