An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred off the coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. Due to the earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued for Russia, China, Japan, the USA, Canada, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador.
FIRST TSUNAMI WAVES REACHED 2 COUNTRIES
The first tsunami waves reached the coasts of Kamchatka and Japan. While the residents of the regions were evacuated, part of the city of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia was submerged due to the tsunami. The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged in the 9.0 magnitude earthquake on March 11, 2011, and experienced a nuclear leak, also began to be evacuated.
THE STRONGEST EARTHQUAKE SINCE 1952
In a statement made on the social media account of the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Geophysical Service, it was noted that the earthquake in Kamchatka reached a magnitude of 8.8 around 3 AM Moscow time, marking it as the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952.
