Thousands March İn Memory Of Russia's Slain Opposition Leader

Rally in capital commemorates Boris Nemtsov who was shot several times from a passing car near the Kremlin late Friday.

Tens of thousands of people on Sunday marched in memory of the Russian opposition figure Boris Nemtsov, who was shot dead in the Russian capital of Moscow late Friday.



The crowd gathered at the Kitay Gorod street in the capital marched to the bridge close to the Red Square where Nemtsov who was fatally shot from a passing car. He was 55.



Those who attended the farewell march carried flags of opposition Republican Party of Russia - People's Freedom Party, as well as photographs of Nemtsov.



According to Moscow security, around 17,000 people and many non-governmental organizations attended the memorial rally.



Russian police took wide security measures and closed the traffic during the march in support of Nemtsov, who served as first deputy prime minister in the 1990s.



As the leader of the opposition Republican Party of Russia - People's Freedom Party, he was one of the most outspoken critics of President Vladimir Putin and Russia's role in the Ukraine conflict.



Putin said on Saturday that he would do everything possible to bring to justice those responsible for the murder.



According to Russian media, the opposition leader had received many death threats in the past, which he shared with Russian security officials.



The U.N. and the U.S. have condemned the "brutal murder" of the slain Russian opposition leader.
