Three Muslim Brotherhood Leaders Arrive In Turkey After Leaving Qatar

19.09.2014 18:53

Following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statement welcoming Egypt's banned Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders who were recently asked to leave Qatar, a member of the MB, Jamal Abdul Sattar, has arrived in İstanbul with two other members of the organization, and said he preferred Turkey due to the country's.

Following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statement welcoming Egypt's banned Muslim Brotherhood (MB) leaders who were recently asked to leave Qatar, a member of the MB, Jamal Abdul Sattar, has arrived in İstanbul with two other members of the organization, and said he preferred Turkey due to the country's position opposing the military regime in Egypt, according to a report.

Al Jazeera Turk reported on Friday that the former deputy head of the Egyptian Religious Affairs Directorate, who has been in exile in Qatar, has moved to Turkey and plans to live in İstanbul. Sattar said two other people, namely the foreign relations officer of the MB Amr Darrag and the Egyptian cleric Wajdi Ghoneem have come to Turkey as well.

In an interview with Al Jazeera Turk in İstanbul Sattar said he has not received an official invitation from Turkish leaders but he decided to choose Turkey to live due to the country's support of people's freedom in the region.

According to international press reports, several members of the group are attempting to relocate after Qatar came under enormous pressure from other Gulf Arab states to cut support for the Islamist group.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt accuse Turkey and Qatar of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist groups in the region.

“We, the Muslim Brotherhood, do not only seek a safe haven. We also seek to find a safe location from where we can struggle against the bloody and brutal military coup against us in Egypt and run our activities free of pressure,” Sattar was quoted as saying in the report.

Sattar said three out of the seven MB leaders who have been asked to leave Qatar have arrived in Turkey. He also added that MB leaders understand Qatar's decision was due to international pressures on the country.

He was quoted as saying that the military administration in Egypt, along with the Gulf States, led by the United Arab Emirates, are fighting against the freedom of people in the region and pressures the region's countries economically and politically. He said the US also joined this camp of pressure recently and claimed that the country is trying to establish a regional coalition of Muslims to kill other Muslims.

The US has been working on building a multinational coalition against the radical group the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Iraq.

Sattar was quoted as saying that Qatar asking the MB leaders to leave is not a crisis, but is a result of their dialogue and agreement with Qatar to reduce the pressure on the country, adding that many of the family members of the MB leaders are still living in Qatar. Sattar also said that there is nothing preventing the MB leaders entering or leaving Qatar.

Sattar also said that some members went to Malaysia and some plan to go to Italy, but he avoided giving the names of those MB leaders.

“If they [the MB leaders in exile in Qatar] request to come to Turkey we will review these requests case by case,” Erdoğan was quoted as saying to a group of journalists late on Monday on his return flight from an official visit to Qatar.
