Tribesmen Down Warplane İn W. Libya: Witnesses

Tribal forces allied with Libya's Tobruk-based parliament and government-backed army have shot down a warplane affiliated with the Dawn of Libya militia, eyewitnesses said Friday.



They added that the plane was shot down in western Libya some 10km from the border with Tunisia.



The anti-aircraft missiles that brought the plane down were fired from an airbase controlled by armed tribesmen allied to army commander Khalifa Haftar, witnesses said.



The Dawn of Libya militia, which is backed by Libya's Tripoli-based parliament and government, have yet to comment on the reports.



It remains unclear exactly what kind of plane was shot down.



Earlier Friday, a local source told The Anadolu Agency that violent clashes had erupted in western Libya between armed tribesmen and the Dawn of Libya.



Libya, which has remained in tumult since 2011, currently has two functioning parliaments, two governments and two armies.



Haftar is currently leading the fight against the Dawn of Libya militia, which is comprised mainly of Islamist fighters and revolutionaries who helped bring the Muammar Gaddafi regime down in 2011.
